Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes Mellitus, especially type 2, has become a too common metabolic disorders with dramatically increased occurrence worldwide over the last two decades.
Careful control of serum glucose levels is crucial to the overall management of diabetes. Though careful management may not prevent all of the potential systemic effects, it certainly decreases the potential of serious consequences.
Physical Therapy Management
Physical therapy plays a major role in managing the many sequelae associated with diabetes. For instance, due to associated peripheral vascular disease, diabetes remains the number one cause of extremity amputation in the United States. Certainly, physical therapist assistants are involved in pre and post amputation rehabilitation, including prosthetic training. Peripheral neuropathies may lead to selective weakness and paralyses requiring therapeutic exercise and orthotic training. Delayed healing and chronic recurrent open wounds benefit from hydrotherapy and other physical agents most often applied by physical therapy clinicians. Given the significance of lifestyle management, physical therapy clinicians often play a role in facilitating health and wellness.
